After searching to find a girls’ running program, centered on Christ, physical and social growth, and having repeatedly failed in her attempts, Amy decided to create a girls’ Christian running program of her own, Godly Running Girls®(GRG) .
Godly Running Girls® was founded in the belief that we are able, and are obligated, to make a difference in the spiritual, physical and emotional well-being in our girl’s lives.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Today, Christian parents are challenged with the task of debunking the liberal lies of the media that surround us. According to a study by the National Institute of Media and Family, “The Medias’ effect on Girls: Body Image and Gender Identity”, reported that 50 percent of the Medias’ advertisements are aimed at girls and that the advertisements are focused on physical attractiveness. In an article written by Jean Holzgang, called “Facts on Body Image”, Jean states that the number one desire of girls 11 to 17 is to be thinner. Girls today, even younger than age 11, are constantly bombarded with worldly views on body image and physical appearance that are contrary to Godly Biblical character. Despite parents’ best attemps to guard our daughter’s hearts (Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. NLT), it is neither possible nor realistic to block out the world entirely. As innocuous as it might seem, even the local grocery store becomes dangerous territory as one walks through the checkout line observing the scantily dressed, and airbrushed, models and explicit titles lining the magazine racks flanking her.
The media has made a fortune by selling magazine and T.V. ads that sell every type of product that promises to make you prettier, younger, skinnier, and happier. Modesty and Christian values have become outdated in advertising and have been replaced by using sex to sell any and every type of product. We as parents must find tools to combat these media lies and must teach what real beauty is according to God’s word.
Psalm 139:14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. NIV.
Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. NIV
On the flip side of tween girls’ obsessions with physical beauty and trying to obtain perfection, is the growing prevalence of childhood obesity. According to the CDC, Center of Disease Control and Prevention, obesity in children has tripled in the last 30 years. In children 6-11 years old, childhood obesity has increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.8% in 2008. An article in Medical News Today reported that the most significant factor that leads to childhood obesity is a lack of physical activity. Children, on average, watch 4 hours of T.V. a day. With an increase in computer and video game use among children, the number of hours engaged in sedentary activities increase in a given day. Obese children are at a higher risk of developing chronic diseases and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Parents can take steps to prevent childhood obesity by limiting electronics and finding programs to get kids active.
Proverbs 22:6 says, Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
